Stone Comes First

Nothing you build counts until a Flame Altar covers it. The altar costs five pieces of any stone at the manual crafting menu, and the recipe unlocks when you accept the quest Claim A Spot For Your Base. Inside its boundary every block and reshaped hill is permanent unless you extinguish the altar; outside it, the same work resets after 30 minutes or on the next restart. Ten altars can stand in one world at a time.

Widening that boundary is the next cost:

  • Level 1 covers 40x40x40 and costs nothing.
  • Level 2 covers 80x80x80 for 1 Shroud Core.
  • Level 3 covers 120x120x120 for 5 Shroud Core, and needs Flame level 2.
  • Level 4 covers 160x160x160 for 5 Shroud Nexus, and needs Flame level 3.

Strengthening the Flame is the other half of the job. Flame level 2 asks for 1 Spark, 5 Resin, 5 Penny Bun, 5 Bones, 5 Shroud Liquid and 5 Animal Fur, and returns a point on every attribute, another minute of Shroud time, and a higher Shroud Passage level — which opens red Deadly Shroud locations that were closed before.

Wood: An Essential Resource

Wood is an important material for constructing your base in Enshrouded.

Wood Logs come off felled trees and broken wooden objects, and the yield scales with the size of the tree — twigs and resin drop from the same swing, which is where the resin for a Flame upgrade comes from. Planks are the refined form: a Table Saw turns 1 of any wood into 2 Wood Planks in a minute, unattended.

Resource Storage and Accessibility

Efficient storage and organization of resources can greatly improve your base-building process.

Two chests carry the load. The Large Magic Chest holds 40 slots and feeds workshops inside a circle of roughly 100 metres; the Carpenter builds it from 1 Large Chest, 10 Shroud Particles and 1 Alchemical Base once Tin Ore has unlocked the recipe. The Enormous Magic Chest holds 72 and covers the whole Flame Altar base instead of a radius, for 24 Wood Planks, 15 Shroud Slime, 1 Shroud Radiance and 2 Gold Bars.

The auto-deposit is a prop you place, not a setting you switch on: the Quick Stack Station, crafted at the Carpenter in two sizes, empties every stackable item from your backpack into the magic chests around it. Each chest can be toggled to accept or refuse it, so one stays reserved for what you would rather sort by hand.

Building Straight Out of the Chests

Update 8 removed the step that used to cost the most time. Building from a magic chest no longer needs at least one of that material sitting in your backpack; the stacks can be drawn on directly. The Construction Hammer opens a Material Catalog that lists and sorts the whole building inventory. The same update put an acquisition hint on almost every crafting resource, so anything you are short of says where to look.
